Why Choose a Full Leather Farrier Apron?
A full leather apron offers unmatched durability compared to hybrid designs. It provides consistent protection, longer lifespan, and better resistance to heat and abrasion making it a preferred choice for serious farriers who work daily in demanding environments.
Does Full Leather Get Too Hot to Wear
This is the most common concern about full leather aprons and it is a legitimate one. Solid leather on both surfaces with no mesh backing does trap more heat than a leather-canvas-mesh construction.
For farriers working in consistently hot climates or doing high-volume cold trimming in summer, the leather-canvas hybrid models with air mesh lining are the more comfortable daily choice. For forge work and hot shoeing where heat is already part of the environment, the full leather construction performs better.
Care Instructions
Full leather requires slightly more care than leather-canvas because both surfaces need conditioning, not just the outer layer.
- After every use, wipe down both the outer and inner leather surfaces with a clean damp cloth to remove dirt, sweat, and debris.
- Monthly apply leather conditioner to both cowhide surfaces, outer and inner, work it in with a soft cloth and allow it to absorb fully before storing.
- Allow the apron to air dry completely after use before storing
- Hang flat or on a wide hanger in a dry ventilated space do not fold for long periods as creasing leather in the same place repeatedly weakens the fiber at that point over time.
- Never machine wash, it destroys the leather fiber, breaks down the foam core, and degrades the stitching faster than any amount of regular professional use.
